Search results for this story carry two different location words, and it is worth settling before anything else, because the neighborhood is not a detail — it is the story's address.

Both outlets we read name Vine City. FOX 5 Atlanta's headline reads "Former GSU football player killed in Vine City shooting, arrest made," and its story describes the booking as following "a quadruple shooting in Vine City." WSB-TV places the shooting in Atlanta's Vine City neighborhood.

Where the word "downtown" comes from is FOX 5's own opening sentence and its web address. Its lede reads: "A 19-year-old man is accused of murder after a deadly shooting at a downtown Atlanta apartment complex on Tuesday left one person dead and three others with gunshot wounds." The story's URL slug likewise says downtown. FOX 5 also puts the scene "near Mercedes-Benz Stadium," which is the landmark most readers will place first.

Those are not in conflict. According to reference geography for the neighborhood, Vine City sits in central Atlanta immediately west of downtown, bounded on the east by Northside Drive and downtown Atlanta — and Mercedes-Benz Stadium sits across Northside Drive. So "downtown Atlanta" is the wide label and "Vine City" is the precise one, describing the same few blocks.

The Local Alert uses Vine City, because that is the neighborhood both outlets named and the one residents use. We are not quietly discarding FOX 5's other wording; we are telling you it is there and why the two coexist.

That is everything a named source has said about the man himself. We are not publishing anything about his personal life, his household, his associations or why he was in that apartment, because no source we read has stated any of it. What the Georgia State record book says

FOX 5 noted only that "Skelton was a former Georgia State University football player in 2012." Georgia State's own athletics department keeps a fuller record, and it is worth putting on the page, because the phrase "former football player" undersells what the school's numbers show.

Four people were shot. Both outlets land on that total, by slightly different routes, and the difference is worth showing rather than smoothing over.

Read that table carefully, because there is a temptation in it we are not going to indulge. FOX 5 reported that Atlanta Police Lt. Christapher Butler confirmed the ages of the three surviving victims as 19, 36 and 37 years old. Smith is 19. WSB-TV reported that Smith was among those shot and was treated at Grady.

Neither outlet says the 19-year-old surviving victim is Naim Smith. The Local Alert is not going to assert it either. We are laying the two reports side by side and letting them sit there unmerged, because merging them would be our conclusion, not a reported fact.

Has anyone been arrested?

Yes. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Atlanta police booked 19-year-old Naim Smith into the Fulton County Jail following the shooting. WSB-TV's headline described one suspect in custody.

Neither outlet we read described where or how Smith was taken into custody, and neither reported whether he has an attorney or has entered any plea. We are not filling those blanks.

The charges — and what a charge is not

The two outlets list the charges at different levels of detail. Both lists are below, unreconciled, because one is simply more granular than the other.

Now the part that matters more than the count. A charge is an accusation. It is a police officer's sworn allegation that a crime occurred and that a particular person committed it. It is not a finding, not a verdict and not proof.
