One point worth clearing up, because it trips up search: this is not U.S. 27. The highways running through Dooly County are Interstate 75, U.S. Route 41 and Georgia state routes including State Route 27 — a 264-mile east–west route that crosses the Flint River into the county and runs through Vienna, meeting SR 90 and US 41 before an I-75 interchange. Its western approach, toward Americus, is what gives Old Americus Road its name.

How deadly are deer collisions, and when do they happen?
Here is the part most deer-accident coverage gets backwards — and it is directly relevant to an accident that happened in August. Insurance claims for animal collisions peak in the fall. Deaths, in the most recent federal data, did not.

The claims picture runs the other way. State Farm reported in September 2025 that U.S. drivers filed an estimated 1.7 million animal collision claims between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025, more than 1.1 million of them involving deer. October, November and December, State Farm says, "continue to be the most dangerous for animal-related collisions, accounting for an estimated 650,000 incidents." Nationally it put the odds of an animal collision at 1 in 139.
In Georgia, a University of Georgia study counted 45,811 reported deer-vehicle collisions across all Georgia counties between 2005 and 2012, according to UGA — the research that produced the state's county-by-county rut map.
Read together: far more deer get hit in the fall, but 2024's animal-collision deaths were nearly tied between spring and summer. An accident like Tuesday's is not a November-only risk.
What does Georgia DNR say to do when a deer runs out?
Georgia's Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division gives advice that cuts against instinct. DNR tells drivers to "resist the urge to swerve to avoid the deer," because doing so "may cause further damage, sending drivers off the road or causing a collision with another vehicle." If a collision cannot be avoided, DNR says to "slow down as much as possible to minimize damage."
Two more points from the agency: deer are most active at dawn and dusk, the hours "most people are commuting to and from work" — Tuesday's accident was reported at about 6:30 a.m. And "deer generally travel in groups, so if one crosses, be prepared that others may follow." DNR separately notes that mating season runs October to late December, and that the fall breeding season is a peak time for deer-car accidents.
